The Power of Music

Donetsk Region 2024

Voice for Ukraine UK Aid 2024

Travelling to the eastern border of Ukraine has never been easy, especially now. Each trip presents its own set of challenges, and this time was no exception. My children and I covered over 4,000 miles, enduring long hours of driving, compounded by the atrocious treatment at Polish customs. We were held in a cage for many hours without any explanation or access to basic human rights. Despite this, the outcome of the trip made every moment worthwhile. I was extremely happy to return to Svyatohirs'k in the Donetsk region and see all the familiar, beautiful faces. We had a wonderful time making crafts, singing, and learning samba.

The highlight for me was meeting the Azov warriors and engaging in a very different routine with them by creating music together. An incredible coincidence was that last year, during a V4UUK concert, we paid tribute to the fallen Azov soldiers, one of whom turned out to be a friend of the soldiers I met. When the soldiers saw the video of the LUSO performing "Never Forget," they were deeply touched and presented me with the T-shirt of their fallen Azov friend, who gave his life defending Mariupol. It was a profoundly moving experience. They thanked us for not forgetting about them and for telling the world their story.

Epilogue

V4UUK was founded two and a half years ago. I am deeply grateful to my friends and family, who have supported me throughout this journey. Unfortunately, the situation in the war zones of Ukraine remains critical for children's education. We need to raise more funds to sustain music and art therapy sessions. Despite working tirelessly, it is disappointing that raising funds and gaining support from those who can make a real difference has not become any easier. If you can help sustain the V4UUK project in the Donetsk region, please consider donating through our 'Donate' page.

As for me, I will continue doing everything in my power to bring a bit of happiness to the children of Donetsk and ensure that the bravery and heroism of these warriors are never forgotten.
